Wow, several very different options to choose from.

Personally, I like JFG's solution best, because:

- It's 71-based
- It's short, clear and easy to use
- It uses the loop and :DOSLINK to read/update the file in place.

Elegant!

p.s. Also because I can understand this solution; the other 2, not so much without huge amounts of time - not justified for a 1-off.
