Although the mini-USB appears to be more robust, I believe the USB standard specs. for the micro specify more insertion/removal cycles than the mini, and such specs are typically not taken lightly by manufacturers.

Of course, specs. such as these have no say about careless users, etc. The good news though is due to the extreme volume of these in-use, you can get excellent quality micro-USB cables, including the nylon braided cable types that don't twist and get wrapped-up in knots, for only a few dollars each. I got an excellent 3-pack for $8.
