The consistent thing to do on the Nspire is to always use the symbolic options provided via the dedicated keys and the 4 cascade menus keys. The dedicated alpha keys should strictly be used for entering CAS commands or for variable names\letters.
But this isn't about any particular calculator, it's more about what I consider to be a UX best practice for calculators used for education environments, including CAS models. A calculator has the ability to differentiate between standard alphanumeric character input and the symbols students encounter in their textbooks. When a qwerty keyboard is used with a desktop computer, dedicated keys aren't the norm, so CAS tool interaction models tend to be used with programming language style UX models; to the extent that the use of dedicated pallets are sneered upon by power users of the likes of Mathematica and Maple. And rightfully so, treating Mathematica and Maple as glorified calculators kind of misses the point. |
