The speed switch itself is smart enough and does not allow SPEED_HIGH if the battery voltage is below a certain value. SPEED_HIGH is then treated the same as SPEED_HALF. The battery measurement algorithm is so slow that a single interrupt cycle makes no noticeable difference.

Disallowing SPEED_HALF isn't an option in my view. This is a situation were a shutdown makes more sense.
