New Mathematics were taught between the 1950s and 1970s according to Wiki. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Math https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Math%C3%A9...s_modernes What I remember with certainty is that I was taught during the period 1970 (I was 7 years old) - 1972 what was called in French "mathématiques modernes" or "maths modernes" for short. It was about the notion of sets (intersection, union, inclusion, empty set, relations between elements, etc) and bases other than the decimal base... and it was fun! It was also funny to tell adults that 1 + 1 were not 2 but 10… I don't know what Newton would have said about a negative quantity, but I guess he would have been very interested in my electronic thermometer showing a negative temperature (among other possible negative values)... and certainly even if it had shown a positive temperature.
