I just managed to introduce additional optimizations for pattern searches with "?" at the beginning (speedup depends on the case but ranges from 5% to 50%). In the process, I also found a mistake I accidentally made while implementing one of the previous optimizations, which caused incorrect searches for 2-letter words, and I fixed that as well.
