My respects to your dad. In those times, with such limited possibilities, coming up with and additionally implementing something like that was certainly a great achievement.

Thanks. One exploit of his that he shared with me, when I was taking a numerical course, was that he implemented a Runge-Kutta method for coursework that was one degree higher than what the assignment required. (A perhaps more intricate bit of coding.) (That conversation started with something along the lines of “are they still doing Runge-Kutta?” I’m not sure if “exploit” is the best word there — it replaced something involving “obscure bragging” Big Grin.)

One of his development tricks he passed on to me more than once was his technique for doubling his throughput on the computer back then. His fellow students would typically get one program run in per day, but he realized that he could submit a second job late in the day and then pick up the results first thing in the morning. (So that the results could be gone over before submitting a job midday.)
