Both are somewhat true. The DM41X uses the unmodified Printer-1E ROM, with its own internal firmware doing a translation from the 82134 output to 82240 IR output. And this translation is good, but obviously not perfect.

The original IR module doe snot load since the MOD file format defines which hardware it runs on, and the DM41X recognizes this. It is easily removed from the MOD file, but this will not give you an HP82240 IR printer.
