Have you tried x48ng --tui --small or x48ng --tui --tiny --mono ?

Both variants use unicode characters to display multiple pixels per character.

• x48ng --tui --small uses http://unicode.org/charts/nameslist/n_2580.html to have 4 pixels per character,
• x48ng --tui --tiny --mono uses http://unicode.org/charts/nameslist/n_2800.html to have 8 pixels per character
