If the RAM chip was loading the power supply I would expect it to get warm. It may not though.

If the RAM does not work, then removing it should not cause problems.

The RAM chip is not accessed at start up except for a [Clear Data Registers] instruction which initializes all RAM to zero, so the calculator should start ok.
