The metal back is part of the ESD protection. One of the screws connects the front and the back planes. On the newer models this is done with a piece of foil on the inside on the later (plastic-back). Also - around the same time - the battery compartment with the 4 AAA, switched from rock-solid spring contacts (2 versions AFAIR) to a foam based, where the adhesive, keeping the contacts in place, simply lose their stickiness… |
