A "calculator" shall be "ready to calculate" for 5years from a 3V coin battery. I have a $10 calculator (49steps), purchased 1991, running on 2xLR44, where I changed the batteries last Xmas
I would run the pic32mx @2-4MHz, that is enough for a "calculator", it will still be a few times faster than the original 42s, when lucky
