Only since the whole product is squared this doesn't matter.

PS: The 2nd ENTER after 3 is probably a typo.

Honestly, when I ran through this initially, I made two shortcuts: eliminated the sign change owing, as you said, to the inner-most expression being squared; and I did \(9^8\) to save a level on the stack.

The extra enter is indeed a mistake (corrected).
