There are now several \(\LaTeX\) editors/compilers in the cloud, so there's nothing to install locally. I've tinkered a bit with http://www.writelatex.com, although I use WinEdt and MikTex 2.9 for my thesis, due to the number of files involved. WriteLatex has a rather neat interactive side-by-side presentation of the source and compiled document which makes experimenting very easy.
