I just came across your post again. Please let me add one can study "Industrial Design" (at least in Germany) which makes me think it must be more complex than being teachable in a single book. And yes, good industrial designers know a lot about manufacturing - they even focus on particular manufacturing methods. I know that doesn't help you personally but just for the record.
