I knew the story already, but thanks for the link! I don't think Mark Twain's complaints are fair, I am sure he tried to learn German through a completely wrong method, that is, paying too much attention to grammar matters. I learned English in five months when I was 15, attending 1-hour classes twice a week (ok, two more semesters to consolidate it and still learning it to date :-) During those 18 months no word about Grammar from my Belgian teacher, no books, no copybooks -- just talking. I only regret not having attended his French and German classes, but then again that would have been too expensive for my parents.
