FORTRAN floating point accuracy problems

Hi. I know how to do the conversions by hand and with a calculator, etc. I need this for some code I am writing in circa 1974 FORTRAN IV. The math isn't the issue. The problem is dealing with loss of precision caused by the floating point hardware implementation- which as far as I know isn't a problem on HP calculators or calculators generally since they use decimal arithmetic.
