The 35s does have alphanumeric variables. The fact that they are single-letter variables makes accessing them especially easy despite their limitations. But this is (or would have been if bug-free) a calculator shining on the more simpler operations, with enough power to write quite some complex programs. It can easily exist beside a 42S, and actually did so for some time.

And no, it is not just the number. There is a very clear line from the 32S (and maybe earlier calculators) up to the 35s.
