Oh, you two have done it now. My 48sx with a bad display is now shouting at me to find a donor system with a black LCD. But I just have this sinking feeling that if I actually go through with the process, I'll end up screwing up my keyboard. Or having a display with even more problems. Or who knows what other mischief I'll step into.

I have found that in almost all HP48's that I have opened the rubber piece pushing the keyboard contacts onto the pcb has decayed to some degree. Even if all keys work properly, I generally just go ahead and place another piece of foam behind it to help push the contacts even closer for good measure.

I have found that the 39G to be the most economical donors.
