How could anybody think of "not telling" if somebody "in the field" had reported it in the first place? "Not telling" would only work if they thought people in the field wouldn't discover it.

No, I think it was more likely that due to the time consuming verification, units were sold whilst the verification process was still in progress. It is thus likely that the bug was found by HP themselves during this on-going verification.
