DIY magnetic cards?

Dave, you raise a good point about the thickness. I'll be sure to test the reader with a real card. You're right that it doesn't make sense to make your own cards to try to save money, but I guess it's the DIY challenge that I find appealing. Also, I imagine the cards will become harder and harder to get since they're discontinued - I'd be nice to know I can always make some.
