I can confirm Gerald's surprising timings. Consider this program:

<< 1. 10000. START 3 DROP NEXT >>

If it is compiled as usual, using an ordinary short-form 3, hex 273CE, it runs in 14.14 seconds, but if compiled with a long-form zint (which is what ZINT 3 would compile to), hex 030000702614, it runs in 14.7 seconds. So short-form zints are faster than long form zints. I would LOVE to hear an explanation for that, since Christoph's argument to the contrary makes sense to me.
