Yes, that's the correct polarity.

I've modified a few of my battery holders in the same way, by cutting the crosspiece. You can then stretch the sides slightly and pull the cells out one-by-one.

I've been using aluminum foil as a "shim" to make sure the cells reach the calculator contacts. The positive end of the cells aren't as "flat" as the original unfortunately..
