No specs are given for that adapter (it's certainly not a charger because the 82240A/B isn't a rechargeable device) so I wouldn't trust it, personally.

The adapter (or the power distribution circuits inside the printer) may not be able to provide enough amperage when the carriage motor is running and the print head is running flat out. Any extra power it needs it'll take from the batteries.
