I have used a DC 12V 3A adapter with a 5.5mm outer / 2.1mm inner diameter barrel jack.

Only if the voltage is too high. The polarity doesn't matter because the original adapter was AC and it gets rectified to DC in the printer.

The original AC adapter was a bit wimpy and couldn't supply enough current. The batteries may not be required if you use a beefy enough external power adapter.
