Some of the early ones (Intel 8087, Motorola MC68881) did. It's my understanding that more recent systems, both hardware and software, tend to use other algorithms to get faster convergence. See _Elementary Functions: Algorithms and Implementation, 2nd Ed._ by Jean-Michel Muller.
