Short variable creation

I am new to the HP Prime and having trouble seeing the keys (uncorrectable eyes), especially the text keys. I want to assign/create short variables that reference long variables for us in the Apps. It appears that apps have specific limitations on case or length of variables so thot I could create short 1 or 2 alphanumeric variable names that reference longer names.

Is there a way to do this or better yet a more direct way?

All help appreciated.
