I wonder if the whole calculator operates in ASCII, a bit like BCD but ASCII version. That would be pretty unique!

Haven't looked at the ROM a single "bit" but could it be that these are simply the ASCII representations of the constants for... display purposes (and that there is a binary representation elsewhere)?
Good suggestion but the ASCII is definitely the value. If you change the ASCII string in the emulator you really see a different values during the code execution. Now there could be a cached binary version in memory.
