Yes, statement tokens have bit 7 set but function tokens, operators and variables haven't, so the interpreter can easily distinguish between the beginning of an statement and the expression(s) as part of the statement. This speeds up many things a lot. And that's why a colon separator isn't needed in most cases (but the programmer is responsible to put it where needed).
