One way to solve this is with something I've had on the back burner for a few years: a virtual keyboard overlay. Press a shift key and the map changes to the shifted assignments. When you select an assigned key, the original screen is restored and the assigned function executed.

I think I managed to prototype this on the 50g in userRPL. I've always thought it would make a great presentation at HHC.

I like this idea.
