Little observation: for my experience the university should convey the theory of science, with less focus on numerical works. As there is not enough time to cover everything.
Once one is alone in the field, unless he is working with symbolic manipulations, then it should be normal that numerical computations happen more often.

Plus one can crunch numbers even at the Uni (as far as I remember) if one wants to do it in his study sessions.
