HP-35S Discontinued?

I have another 35s that I play with, so whether to open this and the other two is "I'm not sure". Part of the reasoning behind this 35s was just to get something shipped from Europe.
The batteries in there could damage them over the long run. Plus, I kind of want to be able to play with the 10s+ and the 300s+, even though they don't have proper buttons.
I would think only a collector would truly care about unopened, but I'm not sure I'd want to buy an unopened one after 5-10 years as the batteries might leak in some way.
The only reason I have a complete boxed 48GX is I could buy one when I started collecting. I'm actually surprised I didn't buy a used 48GX, but I didn't realize how different it was from the SX. I was focused on the 41 series at the time and picked up some of the others because they were available or sentimental interest from when I was younger. I simply can't describe my excitement seeing the HP-67 the first time when I was a teenager. I don't know if my infant daughter will have such an opportunity. But maybe when my kids are older we will be the ones to resurrect some of these module projects on newer FPGA's.

Properly used, there is a lot to be learned with these devices. Now that I have a prime and nspire with CAS I'm delving into the philosophical implications of exact vs. approximation that didn't get discussed in middle and high school when I was that age. I asked my neighbor the physics professor if people take the effects of infintesimals into account when working with non-linear equations and since his area is astrophysics, he didn't know for certain other than that people run simulations with data sets covering a range of inputs. Of course, as soon as one uses a computer of any kind it becomes an approximation and there are errors. I don't have and have not seen a measuring device that will show me pi as a value. Not since slide rules!

Once I figure out how I want to open the new calcs and not have the crappy plastic bubble look torn up, I'm sure I'll be opening and checking them ;-)

It took me over 20 years to get a 10c and a 15c, so I'll do my best to stay patient. They both seem to be popping up all the time, although the prices are typically nutty. As someone else noted, these things are getting less commonly desired and prices are going down. Just a week or two ago I missed out on a pretty complete boxed set of a 41CV for only $67, which was positively astonishing.

Now it seems to be the 50G that is insanely out of reach. $200 for a used 50G? That's nutty.
