This behavior is well known and has been discussed in the past, see for instance here.

And as an evidence of the double-precision pi value in Saturn machines, here is an extract of the HP-71B source code (the first Saturn machine, and the only one with public source files):



In the same Math routine module, there are double-precision arithmetic functions to do the argument reduction.
