Michael, Claudio explained that cluster size and quantity affects performance. So while there may be some improvement with FAT16 over FAT32 in regards to speed, the fact remains that if you reduced the size and quantity of clusters (e.g., partitioning your big cards or use smaller cards) you would see even greater performance gains. At least, that is how I interpret what Claudio said.
