My website was originally hosted by an early Pentium PC in our garage, set up by our son, and later by an old 1U rack-mount server. The latter is still there, in service, but not for my website which is now on a virtual server at Digital Ocean (https://www.digitalocean.com/) for $5 a month so I can get a data rate that's a thousand times that of our DSL here at home. The monthly data transfer is basically unlimited, and the Digital Ocean price is less than the server in the garage takes just in electricity! At this point it would probably be more efficient to replace the server in the garage with a laptop and an external drive or two. We use it for automatic daily backups of the computers around the house, and as a gateway router.
