It's likely to guide the paper, once it's fed inside, to the platten, but that's only a guess.

Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I cut this plastic out to use as a tool - as way of getting the ribbon cable out in the first place. Using the plastic as a wedge (inserting it into the ribbon cable slot) then pulling out the cable. I vaguely remember getting some advice on this...

I have repaired a couple of these and neither had this part inside. It looks like a tool that was fabricated by the previous repair person to ease the removal of the flat flex cable and was left inside by mistake.

LOL, that's a great guess! It looks exactly like the kind of 'tool' all the instructions describe for inserting into the flex cable to release the end.
