(HP-97) Reducing Alidade or Transit Stadia Traverse Data
Extract(s) from Calculator Program for Reducing Alidade or Transit Stadia Traverse Data, C. H. Miller & J. K. Odum, Surveying and Mapping, Vol. 43, No. 4, 1983, pp. 393-398.

Abstract. The calculator program reduces stadia intervals, middle-hair readings, and vertical angles into a difference of elevation between the instrument and the surveyed point and stores the last foresight and backsight values for the next calculation in the traverse. Absolute elevation of either the instrument or the surveyed point may be selectively determined, stored, and used for the next sight. True horizontal or slope distances may also be optionally computed for any sighting. The program is written for use with alidades, but it can be used for transit stadia data if three program steps are deleted. Any unit of length or distance may be used, provided it is used consistently.

Stadia-Reduction Calculator Program
The program was written for Hewlett-Packard calculator models HP-67 (hand-held) or HP-97 (desktop) (Hewlett Packard, 1977), and incorporates the three preceding formulas. Instead of using a table, the program calculates the 21,000 tabulated values in the U.S. Geological Survey (1963) reference for use in formula 1 of this report. The program is designed for alidade measurements, but it can be applied to transit-derived data. The program can also be adapted to model HP-65 calculators with other minor changes.
