UNRESET for 95LX: Anybody still have it?
Apparently there's a bug in the 95LX, and doing a hard reset (Ctrl-Shift-On) will blast a couple specific bytes near the end of the first 512 KB of RAM. These bytes may be within your current RAM disk (and are guaranteed to be on the 512 KB model). Does anybody have the UNRESET utility mentioned in this article?

I just patched it up last night, actually, since I only recently got home from the hospital. I've got a pretty fine-point tip for my iron, and I was able to work the old cap off by alternating sides and gently applying pressure. Then it was a pretty simple matter to slap the new one in place. I popped in some AAs that I knew didn't have a full charge, and Setup told me they had about 1/3 left, so I'm assuming it's working as expected. Interesting how just that particular cap fails consistently in the 512 KB models. Did HP buy a bad batch or something? Now if I could just find a copy of DOS 3.22 to load some of the commands/utilities that aren't in ROM (attrib in particular). All I've been able to find are 3.2, 3.21, and 3.3, and the commands from those all whine about incorrect DOS version. |

My company has been bitten by bad batches of capacitors in the past. We are now very picky about our sources. Traditionally electrolytic capacitors tend to have a more limited lifespan compared to other electronic parts, primarily because of their "wet" electrolytic dielectric material and construction. The worst example of bad capacitors I have heard of involved electrolytic capacitors produced by certain Taiwanese manufacturers around the 1999-2007 time frame.
