HP-67 Faceplate Finish

HP-67 Faceplate Finish
The faceplate on my HP-67 has some spots that are glossy between the buttons. Has anyone found a way to restore the matte finish to those areas? Would spraying with a clear satin finish work? Or is it glossy because the black paint has come off?
