Texas Instruments TI-92 II - great find !!
Texas TI-92 II (Advanced Symbolic Scientific Graphic will full QWERTY keyboard).

So I just purchased this for 20 UK pounds ($25 US or so) and was described as "new" by the seller, I had my doubts given they were produced from 1996 onwards (the TI-92 II from 1996 to 1998), but even used was a good price.

It arrived, and amazingly the device was brand spanking new boxed, and had never been opened or used.

Date code indicated manufactured Feb 1998.

It always surprises me when stuff 20-30 years old or more comes onto the market and is brand new and boxed, one wonders where this stuff has been the last few decades.

Probably in warehouses gathering dust?

This one though still had a sticker on it indicating price of 249.99 UK pounds (then around $450 USD) !! So must have at least made the store...

Nice find Smile

But try and find yourself a TI-92 Plus. The screen is so much better.

Yes, I heard this, and the "TI-92 II" display is almost as bad as the 48S/SX ))))

Usable.. just... to think back in the day we accepted this as normal, in good brightness usable, even slightly dim and it is terrible, the 2004 TI-89 Titanium I have is a little better, and the 2010 Casio FX 9750 GII (mid range graphing) is like another world (beautiful bright LCD) as is the HP-50G (almost as good).

Mostly use the HP-28S however and for a 1988 calculator the contrast is usable even in dimmer light!

The TI-92 is an underrated calculator. I prefer that screen to the tiny TI-89's screen.

The screen of the TI-92 and the TI-92 II is atrocious. While the font may be microsocopic on the TI-89, the added contrast makes it arguably more readable than that of the 92/92II. I need glasses to read either one so I'll take the good contrast over the increased size Smile

Only the TI-92+ and the Voyage 200 have the best of both worlds: larger screen and acceptable contrast.

I might do a comparison of all the MC68k-based TIs at some point.

Hello!

Yes, sometimes one can only wonder... On the other hand, some day in the future someone will find a sealed unopened box with an HP-15C Limited Edition inside in my estate and wonder why I never used that wonderful machine.
Some years back I also found a boxed and seemingly unused Ti-92 (not the II or + veriants) on the flea market. The seller (a kind of professional flea-market trader) could not remember where he had gotten it from.

I also liked the Ti-92 quite a lot until I gut a Voyage 200. As others have already said, the display is so much better. It is also much more powerful and occupies only 1/3 of the volume of the 92.

Regards
Max

Yeah, the Voyage 200 is the best option. The TI-89 screen and keyboard layout are awful, and the Voyage 200 has more flash RAM and a real-time clock when compared to the 92 Plus.

If I recall correctly, the TI-92 Plus and the TI-89 are the same thing except for the format. Similarly, the Voyage 200 and Ti-89 Titanium are equivalent devices.

You are correct. Aside from size, number of pixels, memory, CPU speed, real-time clock, and presence of USB, they are essentially the same.

I know it SOUNDS like a lot of differences, but it's mostly auxiliary things. You could pick any one of them up, and they would work the same. Smile

RE: Texas Instruments TI-92 II - great find !!
I was also lucky with the purchase of a rarity: I recently bought a 2011.09 date of production TI-voyage200. This is almost the same as the TI-92 II, but in a different body and with a more economical processor. I only needed a PC data link cable, but the seller gave it along with the calculator, so I had to buy the entire set for $45. I covered all the insides of the TI-voyage with two layers of protective varnish, what I usually do with all my calculators. Very often I was able to buy brand new modern calculators for half their cost, and even cheaper. I think that if you make the inscription "Limited Edition" etc. on them, then you can resell them much more expensive than the real cost.

Where have 8 other types of people gone according to your classification? :-)))

I have heard statements from the owners of the ti-voyage200 that they have LSDs with poor contrast. In my voyage200, the LCD contrast and viewing angles are at the level of the best samples of the middle 90s, and even better than in the HP-50G. In the benchmark, my ti-200 shows the speed ... ??? ... I wonder why this calculator is not present in the standard 8-Queens benchmark? (spoiler: 13.1_s at 5.1V/22mA in the TI-BASIC, HW_2.00.xx_Limited Edition_LTD ... special ordering ... etc ). IMO, buying a good or very bad calculator is a lottery. And I very often win for some strange reason.

The 92 and V200 both seem to be kind of hit-or-miss. I've got one of each that have both exhibited spontaneous resets (not running any weird assembly programs or anything). I've got another 92+ that I purchased more recently, and which seems okay so far - hopefully it stays that way.

RE: Texas Instruments TI-92 II - great find !!
@Dave Britten
I had these problems with some TIs. Try to perform the Send_OS operation from a working calculator, or reset the calculator to its original settings with the removal of all applications. It helped me out sometimes. I want to note that I have never had these problems with CASIO calculators (except for cases with bugs in the C.BASIC application). My StartUp application launched hidden programs from flash in TI200 and in TI-83plus_SE. It seems to me that the problem in your TIs is some unofficial ASM applications. But I`m not a programmer by profession, and I may be wrong.

The main reason the 92 didn't do very well was that it is banned from a lot of exams because it has a qwerty keyboard. The functional similar 89 has the letter keys ordered in alphabetic order and it is allowed...

My wife gave me a nice clean original TI-92 as a gift and it worked fine at first. After a few days it would not turn on anymore. I changed the batteries and it worked for a day and then wouldn't turn on. I disassembled it and found that one of the pads on the main circuit board had corroded through where the four battery terminal contacts pressed against it (see pictures). I bent the contacts slightly so they would press against the good areas of the pad. It worked reliably after that.

I've got an original 92 (upgraded with the Plus module) that kind of acts like that. Maybe I need to open it up and clean these contacts with a little Deoxit and such. Perhaps add a few jumper wires if any of them are really bad.
