RE: (-) precedence
Folks, both Sukiari and Thomas have been warned and told to stop discussing this topic, due to the inappropriate comments made above.

I have done this to allow the thread to be kept open as it seems to be of great interest to many readers, but please stop quoting them and aiming different comments or questions at them specifically.

Feel free to continue to discuss this mathematical topic in the normal, respectful way commonly found here, but try to stay inside the lines.

Thank you.

So what does the CHS key do on a 1970s HP calculator?

RE: (-) precedence

New Mathematics were taught between the 1950s and 1970s according to Wiki.

What I remember with certainty is that I was taught during the period 1970 (I was 7 years old) - 1972 what was called in French "mathématiques modernes" or "maths modernes" for short.

It was about the notion of sets (intersection, union, inclusion, empty set, relations between elements, etc) and bases other than the decimal base... and it was fun!
It was also funny to tell adults that 1 + 1 were not 2 but 10… Smile

I don't know what Newton would have said about a negative quantity, but I guess he would have been very interested in my electronic thermometer showing a negative temperature (among other possible negative values)... and certainly even if it had shown a positive temperature. Wink
