RE: 41 with modules vs 42 (HP or SM)
Back to the original question :-)

If you are going to primarily write your own programs to solve you specific problems - the DM-42 will be much faster.

The benefit of the DM41 / HP-41CL is that you have access to hundreds of roms containing pre-written programs able to solve nearly anything.

Sandmath alone might be worth getting one of these models.
Sandmatrix too.
FunSTUFF - 32K of games.
TVM rom
Extended Stats
all HP roms.
All HP solution books.

and hundreds more. Already written. Already available on the DM-41 / HP-41CL.

Yes, run slower than the DM42, but fast by historical standards. :-)

I have all 3 - the DM-42 and DM41 and the HP-41CL.

Hi,

Just to be clear, that only applies to the DM41X.
DM41 and DM41L don't have the possibility AFAIK to download ROMs etc., not even downloading programs.
They all have to be keyed in on these.

Cheers,
Thomas

Not quite true, you can use the DM41 programming tool to
  • key in your program or load a raw file
  • encode the program
  • transfer the encoded program through the serial port
  • ... or do the reverse

Thanks Sylvain,

Learned something new today!
I don't have any DM41 or DM41L, so it was just what I had understod from other postings, but now I know better.

So the DM41 and DM41L has the possibility to down- or up-load programs using the serial port. I guess this is done "externally", ie. there is no function in the calculator to send or receive a program, but with the programming tool one can access the Extended Memory and there read or write a program.

But no possibility to emulate ROM or MCODE.

Cheers,
Thomas

Gene: Oops. I meant DM-41X. Thanks for this correction! :-)

RE: 41 with modules vs 42 (HP or SM)
I’ve always had a personal preference for the 41 series, although in truth, I use a 12C or 17bii a lot more day to day. I’m not a high level math user (since school), and have seen the 42S or 15C recommended for years to people who need complex, matrix, etc capabilities. I only discovered Angel's magnificent modules since getting into the 41X. It made me curious if these advanced libraries and ROMs flipped those recommendations.

The sidebar about spousal support has been entertaining, too. ;-)
