Does anyone know whether the 3M DC1000 tapes work in the unmodified HP85 computer.

No, they don't work in an unmodified HP-85, but the drive can be reliably modified so that modern tapes can be used.

Contact Larry Atherton, he has done many of these mods for many models of vintage HP desktop calculartors/computers.
