How to purhcase a fully working HP41CX on eBay?
I have bought two HP41CX on eBay recently.
One described as in great condition and the other in great working condition.

HP41CX halfnut: (Canada)
Two of the expansion ports refused to work despite no visible corrosion. When the other two ports on the right (from the back of the calculator) are used, the calc will frequelty reset, and loose its time.

HP41CX fullnut: (USA)
Binding posts cracked and beep ever time a key is pressed.
No visible corrosion.

I mean, what do you have to do to get a fully working one?
I then took a flight to Sweden to retrieve my HP41 CV stored in the attic for the past 15 years.. Oh no. Of course the batteries had leakead all inside.. I got it up and running after some care.. But I am still looking for a CX Smile
Any advice on how to get a a calculator which is fully working and according to the description? Does anyone have either a CX or a CL to sell?

If your CV is a full nut and works well, you can always transplant the HP41CX full nut circuit to the CV body. I have done it several times with success!

The prices of CX in the market are reaching stupid levels, and the quality is going down. (Also due to time: the plastic is getting more and more brittle - you can see it in the repairs)

I gave up on finding mint 41CX as I had to return a couple. Have had much more luck with CVs. I know it's not the same, but I now have 3 absolutely pristine full-nut CVs and one half-nut, and am not looking back...

Don't expect the 41C machines to stand the test of time like the classics do. The level of engineering and attention to detail is simply not there. This was a calculated business decision on the part of HP to keep the price down to competitive levels. After adjusting for inflation, the HP-65 cost about 5 times the equivalent dollars as a 41C. But at the time of the 41C, the market prices for programmable calculators kept dropping and could not support very expensive machines. I'm sure that if we were all willing to pay 5x what we did for the 41C, HP could knock the proverbial ball out of the park, and you could have something to give to your grand-kids.

I would have paid more (way back then) for something more robust (then a poor college student). Perhaps HP performed a market study and or customer polls, leading them to build to a price point. The 41 and the 41 accessories costs were at the top of the market. And HP did not seem at all embarrassed their 41 offerings were priced high.

Can the same words be used to characterize the 75 and the 71 (as you said about the 41)?

On topic on broken 41s. The 41s I've came across were reparable except for a failed display driver. It required a donor from an already parted out 41. Broken fastener locations repair, replacing the flex circuit and cleaning LCD display zebra contacts, fortunately, has brought back 3 41Cs to 100%.

Feel lucky I have not had the bad luck of the OP.

For what reason do you need 3 full-nuts and one half-nut ? :-)

Well, if you have to ask, it's more than likely you won't understand the reply... Addiction is never pretty.... Smile

Hello,

That sums it up pretty well... I (think, not sure however) that I have six different HP-41C calculators. Plain, CV, CX halfnut, fullnut - I don't even know and couldn't tell the difference between the various nuts. And don't really care because I don't like to use the 41 - see the other thread about the worst programmable calculator. And yet, I have to have them. Each single one of them ;-)

Regards
Max

Are you saying it's not even close to enough? Yes, you might be right!

Joking aside, I do use them a lot, and have a tendency to want backups. Plus you never know what gems that next purchase will uncover Smile

I have a 71B, an 11C and a 16C bought between 1982 and 1984 and all work flawlessly despite less than ideal storage and handling. Smile Never owned a 41 or a 75 so I can't comment on those.

Thank goodness.... I was gonna post I have 18 or 19, but thought it would sound silly. Now we only have to wait for Sylvain's comment, the only fully obvious contender here...

RPL is not so interesting, to me at least.

Funny. On the other hand, I have just this one HP-41CX, NIB with fully-functioning card reader, Advantage ROM, PPC ROM and Extended Memory RAM plugged in, plus several card holders with lots of programs stored on mag cards and about 100+ blank cards, so I've no desire to get additional 41s, I'm good.

But then again, I'm not a collector (thank goodness !) and I don't own more than two instances of any model (one for occasional use, another for backup,) except for the HP-71B because many years ago I found a seller offering lots of them in TAS, complete with Math ROM and 4 Kb RAM module each for about $50 apiece and couldn't resist getting a number of them.

Why in the world would someone need 41 calculators? Smile
