I agree, rather odd and unexpected.

The case: Junk, from day one

The device: A pristine example of a machine you don't need, and don't want (even if you want it).

Gene summed it up best: "The 17bii+ Gold is the only HP calculator that was so bad to use, I actually threw it into the trash bin". Same goes for the 10bii Silver.

The case of my HP-12C (30th Anniversary Edition) was a piece of junk that self-destructed like this after 5-6 years. It had never been carried anywhere outside the home. The calculator still looks brand new. I threw away the case in disgust, as it was shedding little flakes of black plastic everywhere.

You don't even have to use these cases to make them look like that. Just sitting on a shelf can do it, given enough time. The PU "leather" that HP used then is terrible, and when it gets old enough it disintegrates just by touching it. This is neither odd nor unexpected.
