HP 15C display weirdness

i have a 1988 USA made HP 15C which has developed a bit of weirdness on the display.

The last comma/decimal segment, the prgm annunciator and the bottom line of the last digit seem to have a life of their own. When viewed directly from above this is not apparent but from a slight angle the digits are dark. The comma also flickers a little bit. The display contrast seems completely off as well.

I did some investigation on this and it could be the display zebra strips but they are difficult to get to apparently.

Any hints/suggestions?
