My HP 9114b disk drive blew the fuse in the power supply. I ordered a replacement and, while waiting for it to arrive, I put a small piece of wire in its place. It worked fine. The fuse came today so I removed the wire and replaced the fuse. Now the Test light stays on after powerup which the manual says means the drive needs service. The drive still seems to function fine, INITIALIZING, reading and writing. What could be wrong?

Run the diagnostics in the CE manual to isolate the problem.

Also, if a formatted disc is installed when power is turned on, the drive will perform a more extensive power-on selftest.

Shorting the connection with a plain wire rather than the fuse may have allowed too much current to flow through the circuit, thus causing stress on some component within the drive.

Not an electrical / electronics engineer, but always leery of performing such a short.

That's never a good idea. If a fuse blows, it's for a reason. Of course, in some cases that reason is going to be simply because the fuse itself got tired, but you can't rely on that.

That's never a good idea. If a fuse blows, it's for a reason. Of course, in some cases that reason is going to be simply because the fuse itself got tired, but you can't rely on that.

There's an urban legend about a guy that used a .22 cartridge for a fuse in his truck. As the story goes, the cartridge fired hitting the guy in the testicle causing him to veer off the road and hit a tree.

I acquired a "non-tested" 9114B a few weeks ago, and mainly bought it because it had two battery packs with it. I was going to give the 9114B unit the 'ole "deep-six", but decided to pop a disk in and see what happened. Got a "Disk Error", so formatted the disk with that unit and it worked fine.

Yesterday I was using it to back up some programs, powered it off, then about an hour later turned the power back on and - nuttin'... No head movement or response from the unit at all, just the TEST light staying on.

I pulled the cover off briefly referencing the service manual on the 9114A, but there are differences between the two. The B model has one jumper, but a dip switch selector where the jumpers are on the A model that select self-diagnostic mode.

Does anyone know where a service manual for the 9114B (like the one for the A model on this sight) might be had? Since I wasn't planning to have this unit operating (I have two that are), I might just play with the dip switch selectors and see if I can get the thing into diagnostic mode. Thx[/b]

My brother told me the dome light in my uncle's pickup wasn't working because of a broken door switch. So my uncle found that a .22 caliber bullet fit nicely into the place where the button had been. Supposedly, it worked fine until he closed the door. BOOM!

(But, my brother (R.I.P.) was known to spin some yarns of questionable veracity!)
