Circular Slide Rule
Many years have passed since I participated in a post with respect to Concise SCIENCE TABLES and circular Slide Rule by SAMA & ETANI. My recent relocation from Kansas to Tennessee was the requisite impetus to open & review the contents of numerous storage lockers filled with paraphernalia from my OCONUS deployments for OIF & OEF. Lo & behold, my 'missing' slide rule & table inserts. The front side has a circular slide with english & metric scales along the long edge(s) while the back side has a periodic table of the elements with a temperature conversion chart along the top long side as well as a double-sided insert with mathematical formulas, chemical & physical data, pressure, & gas constant values tables on one side with energy, power, greek alphabet, velocity, volume mass, force, length, & area tables on the reverse side in a leather case. Three additional inserts with a mix of repeat & new (electrical, physics, geometry, etc.) tables are also included in a plastic carrying case.

Sorry for the longgg delay in an update to that post; pics may follow.

BEST!

RE: Circular Slide Rule
These things are cool and very satisfying. You don't need a fidget spinner when you have one of these. Joe Horn posted some excellent photos of his, plus some of a slightly different slide-out insert from one of mine.

https://holyjoe.net/hp/600-st.htm

These came in several slightly different styles, but in MANY different colors and logos from all kinds of manufacturers in the 60's. They were high-end marketing giveaways for large or important customers and were treasured by the owners.

These show up regularly on eBay with wildly erratic prices ranging form $20-$100.

RE: Circular Slide Rule
Funny coincidence... I bought a small Concise circular ruler just ten days ago.

[Image: concise.jpg]

The instructions are on an A4 sheet, printed on both sides.
(can be scanned in pdf if anyone is interested)

RE: Circular Slide Rule
I might be reading the site wrong, but it appears there are a couple of Concise ST-600's for sale at the
International Slide Rule Museum. $30 plus $8 shipping (USA?)

https://www.sliderulemuseum.com/SRM_Dupl...html#Order

Reading this thread got me excited about buying one, but I guess common sense kicked in before I figured out how to actually buy one..

Not a shill (Really!).

What a nice old gadget! I reckon I could have used that!

So what was the focus of each insert version, ST, CE, MM, & EE?

RE: Circular Slide Rule
Concise still sells circular rules. They’re available new on Amazon (this https://a.co/d/cD5zZzR is one, for example) or can be ordered directly from their https://www.sliderule.tokyo/products/lis...gory_id=30 site.

Thanks.  I just ordered a model 300 which has the trig scales.  It'll be my first real circular slide rule.  I have, but can't find, a small circular one for flight, which I got in flight ground school in about 1980, a cheap substitute for an E6B which I should have gotten instead, but I don't have any general-purpose circular rules yet.  I never went on to get the in-the-air instruction.

Take a look at the https://www.sportys.com/e6b-circular-fli...puter.html and see if that will fill the gap in the collection.

I love circular slides rules.

I think Garth is referring to one like this:

https://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/523

In ground school in the early 70's I wanted to buy one of these, but my instructor (rather strongly) suggested I get a full-sized model instead as wind calculations (on the back) are much harder to make out in flight due it's smaller size. I long regretted it, but he was no doubt right about it. I've considered getting one in later years, just because, but held out each time. And now this discussion comes along...

Do you have 4 units, with one of those in each unit?

I've long wondered what the "ST" stands for, along with the others. It's easy to guess:

EE=Electrical Engineer
MM=Mechanical / Maintenance
CE=Chemical Engineer
ST=Scientific / Technician

etc. but the content does not always align with guessed names. Perhaps I need to re-read the manual??

Also, what is the star for? It's present on the upper right corner on one side of all of them, but there's no analogous symbol on the frame to suggest which position is "right". Perhaps a quick way to see at a glance which side is "up" when first extracting it??

No, I have one (1) unit w/ three (3) additional inserts

Also, what is the star for? It's present on the upper right corner on one side of all of them …
A star is on the upper left of the front side of the unit; I align the star on the insert to match the star on the unit

According to the manual for;
Model 600 series;
… INSERT-CE for chemical & mechanical engineers & chemists
… INSERT-ST for science students
Model 200 series;
… INSERT-EE for electrical & electronic engineers
CIBA Medical
INSERT-MM for medical students & nurses ?

I received my order on 11 JUL '77 from SAMA & ETANI, Groton Massachusetts at Kansas State University while completing a degree in Civil Engineering.

RE: Circular Slide Rule
Thanks for the link to the E6B's.  Sporty's is one of our distributors, but I hadn't given a thought to the fact that these might still be available.

The ST scale is for SIN & ASIN, and TAN & ATAN, of angles less than about 5.7°, since at small angles they're nearly the same.  You could crank in a small correction factor if you want, for down to a degree or two, and below that, there's no point.  I do however have another slide rule that has separate scales for these from about 5.7° down to about 0.57°, and then they're combined below that.

Sorry Garth, the "ST" I was questioning is the type of plastic slide insert, which Kim discovered (it's right in the manual dang-it), not the slide rule scale, but thanks for trying to help.

For a moment I thought, 5.7°/0.57° seemed oddly specific, then I realised why Smile

I've just ordered a Concise 300 from Amazon JP.
