Hi, each post should allow you to rate it as good or bad, to determine the interest or importance given to it by the forum users.

Rating posts as “good or bad, to determine the interest or importance given to it by the forum users” is problematic and unnecessary. For example:
1) Rating posts as “good or bad” in a friendly forum is potentially divisive and would cheapen it by mimicking sites whose members vie for “likes”.
2) Such ratings probably would tell more about the rater than the ratee’s post.
3) Subject Line of posts already conveys enough information to avoid topics not of interest.
4) Number of Views already conveys information about “interest or importance given to it by the forum users.”

This feature will hopefully never appear here, and I'll do all I can to oppose it, though no such efforts are planned or have been considered, so I think we're safe.

If you have a strong need to share your opinion about other people's posts, I suggest you spend time at Facebook, where such behavior seems to be seen as useful or valuable, for reasons I still can't appreciate. While I can admit that from time to time I'd like the ability to "like" a post here, it is not justified by the negativism, divisiveness and trolling that inevitably ensues.

When I see a post that runs more than 3 or 4 pages, I automatically assume it's a good thread with lots of useful info.

Love the friendly atmosphere here. Love that everyone is even accepting of those of us who are not engineers and who are also not particularly good in math, but who still love HP calculators Smile

Many food sites have a way of tagging a favorite recipe so you can quickly build up your own reference set to revisit. It would be nice to be able to return to an informative post like the recent one on display flex cables without pounding your head trying to remember the title or author.

Very frustrating when you know it's there but can't find it!

Touché sir...

Moreover, while I know (but only occasionally use) the subscribe feature, your tip has me thinking I'll try that as an additional index to find stuff. I find the built-in help frustrating indeed, and typically use google's search with a "site:hpmuseum.org" filter instead, but this trick could be a nice addition.

Maybe I'll even subscribe to this thread to see if "down thumb" appears.... Wink

Also you can opt to get email notifications of new posts to those threads. Or not.

RE: Rate each post
On other forums, I often 'watch' threads that I'm interested in. Thanks for pointing out how to do that here.

I'm also generally in favour of a 'Like' feature. If I see someone who has put a lot of work into a post, or made an insightful and helpful comment its nice to offer a nod of apprecuation and support, adding credibility to the post, without cluttering up the thread if there isn't a further response to add at that time. We don't need a 'dislike' feature though.

RE: Rate each post
I respectfully disagree. Apple recently did this on their discussions boards, to its detriment. It becomes a popularity contest in which the loudest and generally incoherent rants rise to the top, increasing their visibility, while burying more useful and helpful answers.

It's good in theory but useless in practice, at best.

Fortunately HP calculators tend to attract people who are generally interested in helping one another, not just randos ranting against the big bad Apple.

And that's the key point! This is by far the smartest and most respectful and supportive forum that I know of. I wouldn't expect that to change and I would expect that any incoherent rants that creep in would be very politely and clearly countered or deleted.

RE: Rate each post
In my opinion we do not need a "like" feature in the forum, let alone a way of classifying posts as good or bad. The forum works well as it is, if you want to express your enjoyment of a particular post you can always say so in a reply.
A forum feature of that kind would help only in quantifying the reactions, which can only foster competition instead of collaboration.

RE: Rate each post
A "like" feature makes sense on sites like Facebook and YouTube, where the volume of posts is so large it is literally impossible to keep up with everything, and users have to rely on an algorithm to select content for them. The "like" feature provides feedback to that algorithm, so it can figure out what could do with more exposure and what could not.

Even disregarding the fact that the policies embodied in any such algorithm are always going to be controversial, the volume of traffic on this forum is low enough that it is perfectly doable to read every single post, and even more doable to just scan the subject lines and decide what to read based on those. I have never felt the need for algorithmic assistance here.

Targeted advertising and the ensuing revenue, which this site does not rely upon, and for which I am thankful.

Me too. I'm not "the product" (who's data is bought/sold). Any if you're on any kind of "social media" you are "the product". This is how companies that provide a "free" service to end-users become very wealthy.
