Cannot Upgrade Firmware Past Ver. 8151 [Solved]
I can't upgrade my HP Prime to firmware ver. 10077. I've tried all the suggestions I've seen here and at the HP Support Forum (h30434.www3.hp.com):
1. Deleted the Connectivity Kit and the Virtual Calculator and reinstalled. The Connectivity Kit's "Upgrade Calculator" option just reinstalls firmware 8151.
2. Tim's suggestion to upgrade in recovery mode (hold down Symb, insert paperclip). Still just reinstalls 8151.
3. Tried many different USB ports.
4. Tried to go to http://ftp.ftp.hp.com/pub/calculators/Prime. None of my browsers let me go there.
5. Looked for drivers at hp.com, which has the Connectivity Kit but no firmware to be found.

Please help. My calculator is stuck at 8151.

Paul,

I know. That's exactly what I typed when I posted my message, but the website changed "ftp:" to "http:". I realize it's an FTP URL, not an HTTP one.

RE: Cannot Upgrade Firmware Past Ver. 8151
informach,

Yes, I know it's an ftp address, and I have typed the proper ftp URL, the one you gave. My browser somehow rewrites the address when I type it correctly in these messages (anybody know why it's doing that?). Very annoying. Please ignore the "http:" string in my original note.

At any rate, when I try to go there, I get a "connection timed out" every time. I'm searching through my firewall rules now, and can't find anything that would prevent an ftp connection. I'll keep trying from other OSes and browsers.

But you have not answered my real question: why is the HP Connectivity Kit not updating my firmware correctly? I have Build 2016 4 14 Rev. 10077 of the Connectivity Kit. When I click on "Update Calculator," it simply reinstalls firmware 8151 every time.

=====================
Test for myself:
typing in ((ftpSmile) // ftp.(only one time)hp.com/pub/calculators/Prime
http://ftp.ftp.hp.com/pub/calculators/Prime

========= end test =====

Is the account you are using a "non-admin" user account? If so, then it might be possible when it attempts to get the location of the update files on your drive, it is looking in "\Users\Administrator\Documents\HP Prime Connectivity Kit\firmware" or something like that. Can you look on your drive to see if you have two places where the firmware files have been placed?

Once you've found that, delete the files in the admin spot (else put the new ones there).

RE: Cannot Upgrade Firmware Past Ver. 8151
Tim,

Yes, you were right. I had two firmware directories, one for admin and one for myself (I never log in as admin). I deleted the one in admin's home directory. After deleting it, the connkit (run as a normal user) still installed only firmware ver. 8151. (Yes, I tried updating it first, but it just sits there for over an hour and says "connecting.") So I uninstalled the connkit and reinstalled it from the HP Support Forum (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/), but that installed a much earlier 2013 version of the connkit, which doesn't even see my HP Prime when I connect it through the USB cable. I see now that you expect people to download it from the HP Museum instead, but that requires access to ftp, which I can't get to through my firewall here.

Questions:
1. Should the connkit be run only from the admin account?
2. Is there a non-ftp option for downloading it, and why can't I get it from hp.com?
3. If we're not supposed to go to the HP Support Forum, can you please delete that old 2013 version there and tell people to come here instead?
4. Is there an HP store in the Washington DC area that I can just take my calculator to and get it up updated? That might be simpler for me. Thank you.

That is because the files are still the old ones.

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/calculators/Prime/...160414.zip

That is a direct link for the firmware file over http. It should work fine for you. Then place those files into your <user>\Documents\HP Connectivity Kit\firmware directory.

Here are the links for the others directly.

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/calculators/Prime/...160414.exe
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/calculators/Prime/..._04_14.exe

Quote: I see now that you expect people to download it from the HP Museum instead,

No, the expected way is that it will be automatically downloaded. When ftp is blocked though, that is a problem. We are working to resolve that issue.

Quote:1. Should the connkit be run only from the admin account?

No, but the updater does require admin privileges due to the way it writes to the calculator flash.

Quote:2. Is there a non-ftp option for downloading it, and why can't I get it from hp.com?

I posted it above. That is hp.com, but the links used internally in the auto-updater are the ftp:// form vs the http:// form. We are working to resolve that.

Once you've installed the emulator/connkit again and you have those "firmware" files unzupped properly, try the updater again. It may not find the files once the small updater window is open. However, there is a button with a folder to browse for the files. Select the <user>\Documents\Hp Connectivity Kit\firmware location, and it should proceed and you'll be up to date.

RE: Cannot Upgrade Firmware Past Ver. 8151
Yay! My HP Prime is at 10077. But I must provide some feedback . . .

Tim, I followed your instructions to the letter, but they did not work as a regular user; the Connectivity Kit said it had found 10077, but after each "update," my Prime still showed ver. 8151 when I clicked on "About HP Prime." (Yes, I had first deleted every single HP Prime-related directory and file and program on the machine and reinstalled everything from scratch. And, yes, I entered the correct Admin password at every UAC prompt that popped up during the steps.) Your steps did not work until I logged out, logged back in to the Administrator account, and then did all steps from there from the beginning.

Thank you very much for your patient help. The non-ftp download links worked perfectly, and all my software is now upgraded to the latest version.
